McIntosh is reissuing the ML1 MkII, and naturally, the retro speaker is equipped with modern technology.
More and more manufacturers are reissuing old classics, especially from the 1970s. Retro is in, which is evident from the soaring prices in thrift stores, particularly for vintage audio equipment. The problem with these old items is that they often require a lot of maintenance and tend to produce a distinctively warm, colored sound. Modern reissues of old classics take a different approach. They retain the nostalgic appearance but update the technology to suit the present time. This holds true for the new McIntosh ML1 MkII as well.
The first from McIntosh
The original ML1 made its debut back in 1970 and was McIntosh’s first-ever released speaker. It was produced in virtually unchanged form for seven years, and then it disappeared. Until now, that is, as the ML1 MkII is here for enthusiasts of bygone times. The classically designed cabinet is made of oiled walnut wood, complemented by a stylish matching front. Despite its modest height of only 66 cm, the speaker weighs nearly 30 kilograms. The bass reproduction is handled by a 12-inch low-frequency driver, accompanied by two 4-inch midrange drivers also made with polypropylene cones. Naturally, a tweeter is not absent either. The speaker’s frequency range spans from 27 Hz to 45 kHz.
The price for a pair of the soon-to-be-available McIntosh ML1 MkII is €16,000.
