The new open-source surround system Eclipsa Audio, developed by Google and Samsung, is rumored to be making its way to Android TVs as well.
It’s hardly a surprise that Eclipsa Audio, Google’s Dolby Atmos rival, will also be rolling out to Android TVs. Various sources – including this one – report that at least two brands will integrate the technology. The real question remains whether this newcomer can actually dethrone the well-established Atmos. That will largely depend on widespread market adoption.
Until now, it was only confirmed that Eclipsa would be implemented in Samsung TVs and soundbars launching this year. That alone wouldn’t have been enough for a major breakthrough. However, brands like Hisense, Sony, Philips, and TCL – running Google TV version 16 or later – are now being mentioned as potential adopters. That would make for a broader rollout than just the two “confirmed” brands.
Of course, this is all speculation for the moment, and it remains to be seen whether consumers are even interested in yet another new format. Still, the open-source aspect of Eclipsa Audio is undoubtedly intriguing.
