Netflix has launched a tentative offensive against “account parasites”; people who don’t belong to your household but yet hitch a ride on your subscription.
It seems to be a fairly common occurrence: person X takes a Netflix subscription. And then adds one or more roommates to it. That’s fine, no problem. But if family members and (or) friends and colleagues from outside that household are subsequently added, that’s not allowed. Netflix has started an experiment to deal with these freeloaders. They get a notification explaining that their action goes against the terms of use. At the same time, they are offered a seperate subscription – at a discount even. If someone agrees, things like viewing history, my list and recommendations are carried over to the new account. The test will start soon in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru.
