For whom

The Audiolab 9000P will probably be combined with either an Audiolab 9000Q or Audiolab 9000N. It may also provide additional power for owners of an Audiolab 9000A. The Audiolab 9000Q is more likely to be seen in other systems. As the heart of a system. Its high quality and extensive connections lend themselves perfectly to this. In any case, both units are for the price-conscious buyer who does not want to compromise too much on quality. Of course, they are also for buyers who like a sleek design.

Compare

We compare the Audiolab 9000P to our Sonnet Kratos power amplifiers. Not really a fair comparison, since our monoblocks cost twice as much. They deliver only 50 watts into 8 Ohms but they are exceptional watts. The Audiolab 9000P wins in terms of control and dispersion. Music comes off completely and stands nice and wide between the speakers without creating ‘holes’ in the soundstage. The Audiolab 9000P has a tight and punchy bass but has more impact on the Kratos, slam and ‘bloom’ as the English say. The Sonnet Kratos also sounds more refined and has a more organic tonality.

We compare the 9000Q’s preamp to the lossless volume control of our Sonnet Morpheus. A particularly ingenious application by Cees Ruijtenberg that we are increasingly coming to appreciate. Transparent, open and without any coloration. The 9000Q is almost as transparent but of course has a lot more connections. The 9000Q’s analog inputs are very good and the spread on the 9000Q is wider than by the Morpheus.

Conclusion

We thoroughly enjoyed this dynamic duo. Both the Audiolab 9000Q and the Audiolab 9000P offer great value for money. We particularly liked the 9000Q. This neutral preamp/dac is easy to integrate into a system and will leave little or no fingerprints/earprints. The 9000P is very good in combination with its stablemate but those who buy it on its own are best to listen beforehand so that it definitely fits the set and speakers. Always good advice of course. As the Audiolab 9000 series continues to grow, more and more combinations are possible. It's up to you to make the best choice.
