How long can the Technics SL-1500C last? We are upgrading

We place the Primare R35 turntable preamp (€1600) in the signal path. We change the signal cables on the turntable to the output indicated PHONO, and we flip the white switch next to it so that the LINE output no longer gets a signal.

If you want to use the turntable preamp built into your own amp, provided your amp has one of course, then connecting to the PHONO output of the Technics is what you do. The Ortofon 2M Red cartridge will match with many amplifiers. I would definitely recommend that you try this and establish with your own ears what you prefer. You cannot break anything, at worst it will sound bad.

The improvement with the Primare is initially less than you would expect beforehand, but substantial when you start listening carefully. The sound of instruments becomes more lifelike, the placement in the stereo image is more delineated, more details become audible, strings of an instrument are easier to distinguish from one another.

Listening was done using the supplied cable between the Technics SL-1500C and the Primare R35 and with a Grimm TPR cable (€ 82). The difference then is large. I would venture to say that the reward from a better preamp is only achieved if the selection of signal cables is also done carefully, the Technics is rather sensitive to this.

The step from the Grimm TPR cable to the Nordost Red Dawn is audible, but very subtle. The Ortofon 2M Red cartridge is the limiting factor, because when we connect the Primare R35 to our own turntable, with a better cartridge, the difference does show. The included Ortofon 2M Red cartridge is a good cartridge, but the table itself is clearly better and upgrading the cartridge is then the next logical step.
