Wireless home automation is becoming increasingly widespread, and LumenRadio aims to claim its share of this market with its W-DALI system.
DALI – the protocol, not the manufacturer – was originally a wired home automation protocol. It’s less well-known than popular standards like Matter, Zigbee, or Thread. Most of these are open standards, meaning, for example, a Zigbee lamp from LEDVANCE will work seamlessly with a hub from Bosch or any other brand supporting the same protocol. DALI (short for Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is also an open standard, first introduced back in the 1990s. It was time for a refresh in the form of wireless DALI, or W-DALI.
Distributor Viertron has announced the system, stating that the partnership is ideal for renovations, historic buildings, and situations where traditional wiring is difficult or impossible: “W-DALI is based on the trusted DALI protocol but uses a wireless mesh network. This allows installers to continue using their existing DALI controllers, while communication with fixtures happens wirelessly. This results in significant savings on installation costs and time, without compromising on reliability or flexibility.”
New Applications Possible
Thanks to its wireless nature, W-DALI offers solutions for:
- Historic buildings and museums where drilling is not desirable or permitted
- Offices and commercial buildings with limited infrastructure
- Temporary installations or spaces undergoing frequent reconfigurations
Strategic Partnership
According to the distributor, LumenRadio is known for its patented Cognitive Coexistence™ technology, which guarantees reliable and fast wireless communication, even in crowded RF environments. Viertron will handle distribution, technical support, and project management for W-DALI from its base in Barendrecht.
