MoFi UltraPhono
Contents
This is the first time we’ve tested anything from MoFi. Hopefully not the last time, because it is nice and different stuff they make. So thanks for this introduction, DALI Benelux!
This UltraPhono (599 Euro) is a phono pre-amp in a totally different box than we are used to. That is because it is actually made for headphones. On the ‘box’ is a knob for headphone volume and a Mono and Subsonic knob. That is the anti-rumble filter.
On the bottom we see dipswitches that allow you to tune the pre-amp to your MM or MC element. Surprising how much MoFi got into such a small box!
The sound of the MoFi is really different from others. It is all a bit rounder in sound. That works out great with Otis Redding. We hear a lot of ‘chest’ and we are completely taken in his story. We unanimously agree that this just plays nice.
The classical piece does not go as well. There some dynamics are lost and we miss some nuance. The roundness that the MoFi brings, does not work out so well with classical.
Measurements MoFi UltraPhono
The MoFi measures nicely. We see a switching adapter that does just fine – so it can be done! – and a noise floor that keeps up fine as well. Comparable to the Pro-Ject, for example. The RIAA curve is nicely in line with how we see it more often in this test. No crazy things. In short: technically fine!
