Hegel H95

For whom is the Hegel H95? We estimate that it can attract a wide audience. The Hegel can do a lot. And it is a powerful and stable amplifier that can easily match with loads of speakers. Even the somewhat ‘stubbern’ models. That’s a big advantage.

The reproduction is friendly. It is not a super-open and light-footed sound, like the Arcam for example. But in the bass it is tight and rhythmic. And other models in this class miss that. If you want it all, you’ll end up a few classes higher anyway. For the amount of money, the Hegel is a good amp that you can have a lot of fun with.

Conclusion

The Hegel H95 is a delightful amplifier with a complete feature set. It has several digital inputs, analog inputs and can also stream directly from the network. We don't really care that this can't be done wirelessly: a cable works more stable and often sounds better. However, we would like to see native Roon support added. We also still miss a 'Hegel' app for those who don't want Roon (costs money anyway). And if we can complete the wish list: a balanced input.

Compared to the Arcam, the Hegel is the somewhat 'warmer' sounding amp. It is certainly not too 'brown' sounding, but it stands out when there is a competitor next to it. But the Hegel plays with more 'balls' and a bit bigger. That is a strength. The Arcam, on the other hand, has a bit more detail and seems to play a bit more light-footed. What is better, is completely dependent on the speaker, space and taste. So, just check our samples to make up your mind.

  1. I am interested in Hegel and Primare amps. Both brands do amps with analogue and digital Dacs. Including your review of Hegel H95. you also reviewed/ auditioned the Primare Prisma I15 among other amplifiers under 2500Euros. How would you describe Hegel sound presentation in comparison to Prisma sound presentation?

Out of the beginning lower models of Hegel and Prisma which amp would drive ATC SCM 11 & 19 properly..? (I can’t afford Hegel H190 so I suppose I mean Hegel H95 or H120 or Primare Prisma I15)

Thanks for all the Audio work you do most interesting….!
