How much impact a simple power cord can have, you really just have to experience for yourself. It is downright fascinating how well it is audible. Even going from a “regular” Yeti Standard to a “Plus,” we can hear a difference. And frankly, it’s bigger than we expected.
Scale!
What is immediately noticeable is that the stereo image grows. Yes… bring on the rotten tomatoes…. And yet it just true. How a mains cable can affect the size of a stereo image, we cannot explain directly. Fact is: it is audible, every song again and again and it is just reproducible.
Perhaps it is because the Plus has a slightly rounder character in the mid/bass – and also a bit milder in the mid/treble – which can give the stereo image a bit more air. After all: the bass provides scale.
But it doesn’t stop there: the focus is also just a little tighter. This was already good with the regular Yeti Standard, but the Plus puts it just a bit more ‘real’ and sharp. This already tends a bit towards Reference V3-level. So Yeti has to start being careful not to compete too much with its own top tier products …. although, of course, we as consumers will benefit!
Rounder
As mentioned, the timbre is also slightly rounder. It’s subtle, but perfectly audible and noticeable. At first glance, the regular Yeti Standard seems a bit more nimble, but it’s not; the Plus is just as fast, but just has a bit more roundness and body. It’s not so much coloration; we’re guessing the regular Standard leans toward the fresh side. Not too much, but a touch….
Overall
The Yeti Standard Plus is a very clear step-up compared to the regular Standard. It is actually not subtle: the Plus brings more body, more scale in the reproduction and overall just a better soundstage that is better balanced. Great work by Yeti!
